Playing Catch-up [with Europe]

*Super long post recapping my travels throughout Europe after my stay in Siracusa*
**Only a year late-but hey, late is better than never, right!?**

I believe I left off a little over a year ago, still nestled in Siracusa in my precious little apartment. Like I mentioned in my first post on this blog, I had plans to travel with my two best friends throughout Europe after my had plans to travel with my two best friends throughout Europe after my stay in Sicily came to a close. We did indeed do that, and it was absolutely incredible. After a little
snafu at the airport-we overslept our night in Rome and missed our flight to Athens, but we got there eventually-we got to Athens, which was very hot, but beautiful in all its ancient wonders. We went on a walking tour of all the ancient architecture (picture of a gorgeous example of Greek architecture [left] [photo cred to T. Boo on this one], led by a British guide (to whom we couldn't help but speak to in British accents). We went out to the nightlife area of Athens, called Gazi (picture of us out in Gazi [right]), and got delicious honeydew daiquiris (I remember them over a year later, so you can imagine how good they were!!). It was great, but I think overall, it was my least favorite city of the trip.

After Athens, we continued on to Berlin, Germany. It was a cool, refreshing break from the heat that I had faced for nearly 2 months between my time in Sicily and continuing on in Greece. Berlin was also a stark change from Rome or Athens, as it was completely new architecture, due to a large majority of German cities being completely leveled during World War II. Our hostel was beautiful, with a set of large wooden bunk beds and a pull out couch, complete with a full kitchen (which we never used), and a HUGE bathroom. Absolute Heaven. Our first meal in the city was a little dive diner that we found close to our hostel. I got "currywurst" because I figured it'd be like a hotdog...God, was I wrong. It made me sooooo sick, but I quickly recovered for the rest of our short time in Berlin.
We went on a bike tour of the city, with Flat Tire Bike Tours, which I'd definitely recommend,
as its a quick way to see a whole city in a short period, so you do not feel like you're missing out on any aspect of a foreign city in a dash. We stopped at the Bier Garden, where we were introduced to our new favorite beer: Berliners. They added raspberry syrup to a fresh wheat beer from the tap and ended up with deliciousness. (my thoughts on currywurst [above center], Anna and Toni on their bikes [right])

We were only in Berlin for two days, so we barely got to submerse ourselves in their wonderfully refreshing culture, because before we even knew it, we were leaving the land of the harsh German language and heading for something much more musical (along with another warm climate!): ESPANA!

I had already been to Madrid on my way into Rome nearly two months earlier, but I barely had anytime to explore, and I was alone and so incredibly nervous. But by the time we hit Barcelona, I was completely ready for some Spanish air, and more importantly, some Spanish partying. Our hostel here was the nicest of them all (I didn't mention this earlier, but our hostel in Athens was gross!). Toni took some pictures of the room:

It's kinda hard to tell, but we had three nice beds and a nice bathroom (straight ahead of the TV pictured on the right). And there were closets and everything, which would have been perfect for travelers staying there more long-term. But it worked perfectly for us, and gave a us great spot to pregame to go out, with our bottle of wine costing only 2 Euros (which you can also see in the picture on the right in front of our TV-along with the Sunny-D we used to chase our awful bottle of lemon vodka we brought along with us from Germany :-p)

So in Barcelona, we first went to our hostel and then proceeded to search for the one food we all wanted here: TAPAS! We found a delightful little tapas bar about a block from our hostel (around the corner from our hostel was the grocery store that supplied our cheap wine!), and we devoured two rounds of the most delicious tapas I could imagine. My mouth still waters thinking about it.

After tapas, we really were ready to go out-this is when we discovered this cheap white wine I've been raving about for three paragraphs now. We got two bottles and split them among the three of us before heading out. We had no particular plans, but we headed out earlier than the normal crowd, because we were still on the American college kid schedule. Europeans do not typically eat dinner until between 8PM and 10PM, and then don't go out to the bars until after midnight. Well, by 11PM we were so ready to go out, so we caught some of the early bird specials. We found a bar called Mioh, thanks to an advertiser on the street, so we went in.
It was a blast, and luckily enough, it was the owner of the bar's birthday, and he liked us (how could you not with how good we looked [left]), so he bought all of our drinks. Needless to say, we ended up hammered, and felt it in the morning.

We decided in the morning to do another one of the Flat Tire Bike Tours, with the most handsome guide. His name was Peter and he had an Irish accent that could melt anyone. We were incredibly hungover, and I bet everyone else on the tour thought we were complete jokes. We stopped on the beach and had a pitcher of sangria and awesome nachos, and it rained halfway through the tour, which was so refreshing! It was a more difficult city to bike through than Berlin (perhaps because we were so hungover), but it was still great! After this bike tour, we went back to Mioh after dinner and getting ready, and tonight, there was no one to pick up our drink tab. That's when we finally realized how much money those guys had dropped on us the night before-when one drink cost around 7 Euros. So we of course didn't drink nearly as much, and we got a more restful night of sleep. We also explored the art of Antoni Gaudi in Parc Guell, which was really beautiful [below].

After these ridiculously busy and quick two weeks, we headed back to Pittsburgh, by way of Dublin and New York City. Dublin was cool; we had a ten-hour layover, but we didn't get to see much, as it was in the middle of the night. We slept in the Dublin airport's McDonalds, which did make us look as ridiculous as it sounds. The trip was great, and I wouldn't change it for anything. Best trip ever, with the best friends ever =)

Roadtrips and Midterms

The last two weeks have been such a whirlwind! A wonderful whirlwind at that! Last Friday (7/2), we went to Catania, which is about an hour north of where we are here in Siracusa. It was a nice trip, but the day was so hot!!

The next day (7/3) was incredible! We climbed Mount Etna!! (Now, I can cross that off my bucket list-SCORE!) It was the honestly the greatest thing I've ever done! We had two guides, Massimo and Guiseppe (so Italian, right?!), who were so knowledgable about the mountain and the different lava flows. We hiked up the mountain, then down a hillside of ash, sliding the whole way. It was amazing! We then walked across the Bove valley, which is a giant lava flow, comparable to walking across the surface of the moon. Definitely exhausting, but honestly priceless!

Sunday, of course, was the Fourth of July, so we had a VERY American party on the terrace of one of our apartments, complete with hot dogs, fried potatoes, watermelon and beer. What's more American than that?! We then proceeded to have a dance party on the terrace, which was completely hilarious!

Unfortunately, we had to head back to class on Monday (7/5), but not for long. Gervaso, one of the boys in the program, had a rental car for the day, as he was in Rome for the weekend, so a few of us decided that a road trip was necessary. My roommate (and Italian love) Tonilynn, and the other two boys, Enzo and Dino, decided to skip our Conversation class and we hit the road in a Fiat Panda. We listened to music and cruised down the Italian highway, until we came upon San Lorenzo, which was the most gorgeous beach I have ever seen in my life. The sand was so white and the water was so clear. It was surreal! We got a few Moretti beers and relaxed all afternoon before eating dinner along the water and hitting up Avola and buying some wine on the way back to Siracusa!

The week of classes was fairly uneventful, ending with midterms Thursday. On Friday (7/9) we traveled across Sicily to Palermo for a tour by an Addio Pizzo guide. Addio Pizzo has a network of businesses that do not pay Pizzo, the protection money to Casa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia. It was definitely an interesting tour, but we didn't get much time to see the city itself. On the way back to Siracusa, we stopped at Cefalù, a beautiful rocky beach, for a swim.

This past Saturday, a group of us went to Fontaine Bianche, a beach about a twenty minute bus ride away. I went snorkling for the first time there, and swam through a giant school of beautiful fish! This whole trip has been entirely breathtaking!

Sunday was relaxing, as I just hung out and did homework near the water. I completly forgot to put on sunscreen before going out to the water though, and because of that, I got so sunburnt that I had sun poisoning! I am feeling much better now, so its all good!!

Today (7/13), we went to Saint John's Catacombs in Siracusa for our culture class. It was really a neat history lesson! More updates to come soon!! <3

Siracusa...alla spiaggia

Siracusa, and more specifically, Ortigia is the most beautiful place in the world. It is so peaceful and wonderful and full of such life and culture! The island has been inhabited by so many various societies and peoples over the centuries that the diverse cultures have meshed together to make an incredible island. The island of Ortigia is so tiny that you can get from one side to another so quickly. You never walk more than 10 steps without being to see the water. There are swimming holes and sand beaches everywhere. The food is also unbelievable...whether we're eating pasta or pizza or salad or seafood, its so great! And we definitely spend all of our free time on the beach, the water is the most blue I've ever seen and its as far as the eye can see.

We went on a boat tour of the island the other day, which was wonderful! We went to a private cove, where we could swim right off the boat. Then the coast guard came, and that party got broken up! We joked it was the first time we broke the law in Italy and got away with it. Unfortunately, I did get burnt, for the first time here. The sun is so amazing, it seriously isn't as powerful as it is in Pittsburgh. I'm loving it!!

Classes started today and they are amazing. Its so nice to finally be back into the class mode, and it definitely forces me to use my Italian more, which is obviously the whole reason I'm here! :)I went to the market and was able to talk to all the vendors only in Italian and even my listening skills are getting better already! I don't believe that this place has the potential to get old!

Sadly, Lorraine had to go back to the States today, as she was really sick and just wasn't feeling any better here. It was so upsetting, especially since she is the whole reason I chose this trip over any others! But hopefully, she'll feel better soon!

Roma

Good news...I successfully met up with my group in Rome, and we had two incredible days exploring the culture and history of such a beautiful city. I love the whole group so much, there are such wonderful people going through the same adventure as me, but in a completely different way. There are 12 of us in total, and we instantly became best friends. We are all Pitt students, anywhere from just finishing freshman year to graduating upon returning from the program.

In Rome, we saw such beautiful architecture, like la Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) and la Piazza Navona, where we were able to sit around and drink some wine at night. And obviously saw il Colosseo!! We all took so many pictures (some can be viewed here!) and it was so wonderful. We even found a Steelers bar, complete with banners from universities all around Pittsburgh! We also got the opportunity to go to Vatican city, which was so brillantly decorated and beautiful. I never want to come home!

We're are safely in Siracusa, Sicilia now, and classes still don't start until Monday. Its amazing to have so much free time to eat a lot and play at the beach. More updates to come! :)

Packing Procrastination Panic

So, I leave for Rome tomorrow. And my suitcase? Not packed. It is purely impossible to fit enough stuff for seven weeks into one medium sized suitcase. IMPOSSIBLE! And of course, instead of packing, I'm on here, wasting my time! :)

Let me explain what I'm packing for. Tomorrow, at 7AM, I will be leaving Pittsburgh, getting on a bus, and going to New York City, from where I will go to JFK International Airport and get on a plane which will fly me to Madrid and then finally into Rome, where I will be spending two days on my own before meeting up with the Pitt in Italy group. Once I am united with my fellow Pitt students, we will spend a few days in Rome touring the city, and then head on to Siracusa, Sicily to study for five weeks. During this time, I will be taking three classes equaling seven credits: Literary Italian 1, Conversation (both of which could count as the final class needed to complete the Italian Language minor) and Culture of Siracusa-a one credit travel class!

Once these wonderful courses are finished, I will be meeting two of my best friends, Anna Schneider and Toni Bui, in Rome for a whirlwind trip through Europe during which we will hit Athens, Greece; Berlin, Germany; Barcelona, Spain; and Dublin, Ireland! This is definitely going to be the best summer ever.

While I'm in Siracusa, here is my address (Google Map it, you'll be jealous! :])
Via della Giudecca 77
96100 Siracusa SR Italia

Now, if only I could be packed...

A presto (in Italia!)!!
